A theft crime is a criminal act involving the stealing or receiving of another person’s property without the person’s consent.  In California, theft crimes are categorized as “petty theft” and “grand theft”.  Petty theft is any theft crime where the property stolen is valued below $400.  Most petty theft crimes are considered misdemeanors.  Grand theft is any theft crime where the stolen property is valued at $400 or greater.  Most grand theft crimes are categorized as felonies.
